Looking within, they say, is the best way of going ahead. For it is only when we are cleansed within, that we can really see what’s ahead. As a company that is working towards making the earth a greener planet, our first priority is to ensure that each one of us at Suzlon does our bit to maintain the environment that nurtures us. Here are a few tips on easy to use eco-friendly practices at our workplace. Let’s implement them, and work together for a bigger cause. The green alert is on.
Enable the ’sleep mode’ feature on your computer, allowing it to use less power during periods of inactivity.
Try using natural light as much as possible. If there’s a source nearby through which the sun's light pours in, try using it before switching on a bulb.
Bringing lunch to work in reusable containers is one of the greenest(and healthiest) ways to eat at work. Getting delivery and take-out almost inevitably ends with a miniature mountain of packaging waste. But if you do order, join co-workers in placing a large order (more efficient than many separate ones). Also, bring in reusable plates, utensils, and napkins, rather than using the disposable ones.
Save electricity and paper by sending an e-mail instead of a fax.
Use a more eco-friendly option to dry your hands than a hand dryer - a hand towel. Avoid using paper napkins too.
Use the elevator only if it is very necessary. Take the stairs whenever you can. Not only will it give you some exercise, it will save energy as well.
Collect old documents and papers. Recycle them into scribbling pads. You can also re-use old file folders, dividers and manila folders in the office by using new labels.
Use print preview, and check documents carefully before printing. That way you save not just paper, but also ink.
Word of mouth is One of the best ways to advertise. Speak to your colleagues about saving energy. Make it a team effort to find if energy is being wasted anywhere.
Plants help brighten up the environment and reduce carbon dioxide. Try keeping one around your cubicle, and breathe easier.
Reducing your air-conditioner’s thermostat by just 2 degrees can make a big difference to the electricity consumption. Try doing it if possible, and save a lot of power.
Remove your tie. How can a tie help fight climate change? In the ‘cool biz’ summer of 2005, Japanese office goers swapped their trademark dark blue business suits for open collars and light tropical colors. It was all part of the Japanese government's effort to save energy by keeping its office temperatures at 82.4° F throughout the summer. The policy caused a bit of confusion but did make a dent in Japan's rising carbon emissions. In one summer, Japan cut an estimated 79,000 tons of CO2.
A lot of steel is saved if every office worker uses one less staple a day.
Try observing an earth hour every day – a time when all electrical gadgets are switched off. It can be during the lunch hour so that work does not get hampered.
Don't let energy-conservation end at home. Studies show that many office workers' habits change dramatically once they get to work. They tend to stop doing simple things they do at home to save energy, such as turning off lights when they leave the room and shutting down computers and monitors at the end of the day. Remember, businesses don't cut power consumption - people do. Bringing those good habits into the office helps employers avoid blackouts, save money and be more eco-friendly.
Screen savers save computer screens, not energy. Start-ups and shutdowns do not use any extra energy, nor are they hard on your computer components. In fact, shutting computers down when you are finished using them actually reduces system wear, and saves energy.
Shut doors immediately after you come in, or go out from an air-conditioned room. It helps control temperatures inside, and ensures the air-conditioner doesn’t have to work extra hard.
Make your printer's toner last. If you're printing rough drafts or documents for internal purposes, change the printer's settings to economy mode and avoid printing in colour if possible. Economy mode uses up to 50 percent less toner and prints twice as many pages as higher quality settings. Printing on both sides slashes the number of sheets used by 50 percent.
Use public transport to commute to work if possible. Or start a carpool with your co-workers. Sharing a ride with someone just twice a week will reduce a lot of carbon dioxide in the environment.
