On the back of smart rally seen in last hour of trade, indices closed in green for the third consecutive day. Sensex crossed 10000 mark in the dying moments of trade but due to averaging closed at 9976, gaining 144 points. Nifty put on 60 points to close at 3041. In the US today, Feds open Market Committee is likely to cut the benchmark rate by half to 0.5%, which is the lowest level on record.

All the BSE sectoral indices ended in green. Consumer Durable index was the top gainer, surging 7.4%, followed by PSU index, which gained 5%. ONGC and Grasin were the top gainers among the sectoral indices, up 6% and 4.6% respectively, while Sterlite Ind and HDFC were the top losers, shedding 7% and 4.1% respectively.

Expectations that the US Federal Reserve will lay out emergency tools to dispel a recession at a policy meeting later in the day boosted the domestic bourses in late trade.
